Burial Plots
Planning and arranging a funeral requires the securing and owning of a burial plot in a cemetery if the deceased is to be buried. It is best to make a decision after being informed. Most people nowadays are also making pre-purchases of burial plots to lessen the burden of loved ones.
When buying a burial plot
When making this purchase, you make plans with your funeral director who will make the necessary arrangements for you. We can also check if there is space for further burials.
If there is, however, a grave that you would like to use that is owned by the family/ part of the family plot, and then we can arrange that for you. All that will be required is the deed and any document related to the grave. We can also help locate the paperwork for you if they are not in your possession.
How to buy a burial plot
To begin, you need to have good information about the types of burial plots and what will happen if you change your mind after you have made a purchase. After this you can take the next step which is talking to the local authority, privately-owned burial grounds or churches to check on the availability of the land you wish to use in the area you wish to make the purchase and get details on the cost.
Our funeral directors can also buy a plot for you in an area you desire as you talk to your loved ones about the decision you are making to ensure that everyone’s wishes are fulfilled.
Exclusive right of burial
To secure the burial plot for a set period of time, a lease known as the Exclusive Right of Burial is placed. Although it will expire at a certain point, this lease covers the duration it has been paid for and nobody else can be buried in that plot during that period.
What is the period of time an exclusive right of burial covers in the UK?
These leases last between 25/50 to 100 years. They can however be renewed at a fee; the landowner will contact any next of kin or descendants and after their answer, they will see whether to remove the headstone for the owner to collect before digging a new grave in the burial plot.
Are burial plots bought back by cemeteries?
Many cemeteries have the option to buy back mainly for unused burial plots or if a lease is not renewed. A transaction with the manager of the cemetery will be completed if they do offer buyback.
What if a cemetery is full, what happens?
Unfortunately, in the UK, there is a shrinking of space for plots for burial. That is why it is highly recommended to buy a burial plot in advance; it will help secure space and make the cost less. A funeral director can guide you through other available spaces for your consideration which can serve as an alternative.
Can I transfer ownership of the burial plot?
Yes, you may.
You can assign the rights to a family member or someone close in order for there to be joint ownership. Remember that if you have the lease you have the right to choose who will be buried in the burial pl
What is the cost of a burial plot?
This largely depends on the location, cemetery and the type of plot. For example, the cost of a green burial plot to that of a traditional burial plot is usually less expensive. It does still vary, however, between natural burial grounds. Because of space and how shortages are growing day by day, the cost of a burial plot can be expensive.
Now other elements to deal with cost include the Exclusive Right of Burial or buying of the headstone to mark the grave and for a memorial mason approved by the cemetery to erect it; most cemeteries only permit masons approved by them to carry out such services. You can ask your funeral director to explain the different options according to your budget because, in the UK, costs vary largely.
How do I find and buy a burial plot?
A funeral director is someone who can help you with arranging these plans depending on your needs and whether or not you are from that local area. You can also contact your council in the area you are in to be given a list of burial areas.
