It has more to do of how the society view death. It is kind of a taboo and so it is reflected in the society ideas about funeral directors. The society thinks people who are in funeral profession are often sucked into death, and that is why they get the grim reaper image. Funeral directors are normal people. Only that they have a slightly grislier job than the rest of the people. Their work is nobler than the society tend to recognize. Their primary focus is on the family and helping them through one of the toughest period in their lives. Funeral directors are caring and compassionate people.
Funeral directors spend their day surrounded by bodies. First and foremost funeral directors focus on the families they serve during that difficult moment. They do everything in their power to provide some degree of comfort and peace as the families mourn their loved ones, so as to ease their minds. Funeral directors also spend their time on communities, serving as trusted leaders and resources. They have a life outside their jobs just like other people in other professions.
The funeral profession is for male. In the past, family that owned funeral homes would pass them down from father to son. Nowadays, there has been a surge of women entering the profession. In 2015, The American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABSFE) reported that more than half of graduates from accredited programs were female. As the women join these profession they help cease the perception that funeral profession is a male profession.
Funeral directing is a recent career. Modern funeral does not resemble funerals of the past, but death has always been there. Humans have always put up ceremonies to mourn and celebrate their loved ones. People have always been professional in orchestrating such ceremonies. People make unfair generalization about funeral directors, but more education and good information will help people stop the unfair stereotypes. The nature of funeral directing is guiding and assisting families in time of need. Funeral directors are emotionally invested and passionate about their profession.
It is all about money. All jobs share a common trait of allowing one to earn a living, so it is unfair for the community to say people in funeral profession only want money. There is a little flexibility for a funeral director. They get calls and drop their personal issues to assist the grieving family. The work of a funeral director can be emotionally taxing and exhausting.
