Funeral directors, also known as an undertaker  or mortician. A profession involved in the business of funeral rites. These tasks often entail the embalming and burial or cremation of the dead,  Also the arrangements for the funeral ceremony.

Funeral directors perform tasks such as dressing, casketing, and cossetting . A funeral director may work at a funeral home or be an independent employee.

The role of a funeral director in the UK includes the administrative duties and arrangement of funeral service. Including flower arrangements, meeting with family members, overseeing the funeral and burial service.

In the UK no formal license requirement to become a funeral director. There are national organizations such as the British Institute of Funeral Directors (BIFD), the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) and the Society of Allied and Independent Funeral directors (SAIF).

The BIFD offers a license to directors who have obtained a diploma-level qualification. Both the BIFD and NAFD offer the diplomas.

National organizations offer voluntary membership of “best practice” standards schemes. It includes regular premises inspection and adherence to a specific ‘code of conduct’.

These organizations help directors demonstrate that they commit to continual personal development. They have no issue with regulations should it become a legal requirement.

Tidewater Community College (TCC) announced  that they will be adding a new program in funeral directing. Associate of Applied Science in Funeral Directing.

They offer the program fully online.

In addition, students will be required to have a a 2000-hour externship at a local funeral home in order to receive their state license. They will also have to pass the state funeral laws exam and the state board exam.
